Kalaries are primarly of two types, Cherukalari [ small kalari] or Kuzhikalari [ portions formed by carving in the earth] and the second one known as Ankakalari[ anka means fight].In kuzhikalari the floor of the kalarai is built at a level lower than the surronding land by removing soil to achieve the necessary depth.
